In human years
39human years
Life stage: adult
Maintenance years: steady weight and activity matter more than milestones.
For comparison, the epigenetic clock from Wang et al. (2020) puts a medium dog of this age at about 56.8 human years. Different published models disagree; see how the math works.
The data
Dog age calculator chart by size and breed
The same birthday means different things for a Chihuahua and a Great Dane. Larger breeds accumulate human years faster, which is why one universal multiplier never works. This is the same style of conversion chart the Pedigree brand made popular, computed with a size-adjusted model.
Each row shows a whole calendar year, while the live calculator scales the first two years month by month. That makes the table useful for a quick comparison and the tool useful for puppies, adoption estimates and birthdays that fall between whole years.

Human-year equivalents by size class, rounded to whole years. Model follows AVMA guidance with AKC size adjustment; different published models give different numbers, and that is expected.
The math
How the dog age calculation works
The model here follows AVMA guidance with AKC size adjustment: the first calendar year is worth about 15 human years (scaled monthly), the second year brings a dog to about 24, and every year after that adds 4 to 7 human years depending on size class.
Why the 7-year myth fails
The usual explanation for the divide-by-seven rule compares an average human lifespan (about 70 years) with an average dog lifespan (about 10). That ratio says nothing about how dogs actually mature: they reach adulthood within roughly two years, which the รท7 rule treats as age 14 in dog terms and 2 human years in reality.
Why calculators disagree
Different published models measure different things. The size-adjusted chart models lifespan ratios; the epigenetic clock from Wang et al. (2020) models DNA methylation and gives human years โ 16 ร ln(dog age) + 31. For a 5-year-old medium dog, this page shows 39 human years and the epigenetic clock shows about 57. Both are honest answers to different questions; we show ours in the tool and note theirs in the result.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by 7, which ignores how fast dogs mature early.
- Ignoring size class, the single biggest factor after age two.
- Counting calendar age only for puppies under one year, where months matter.
Sources
Year one โ 15
Human years in the first calendar year, scaled by month (about 12 for giant breeds).
Year two โ about 24
The second year adds roughly 9 human years for most sizes.
Then +4 to +7 a year
Per calendar year after age two: small dogs about +4, medium +5, large +6, giant +7.
Life stages
What your dog's human age means for their care
The number only matters if it changes what you do next. Life-stage guidance follows the AAHA canine life stage framework, summarized per stage.
Puppy: under 1 year
Growth stage. Size-appropriate growth food, the vaccine series on schedule, and short positive training sessions. Human-equivalent: 0 to 15.
Young adult: 1 to 3 years
Habits set here: measured meals, daily exercise, continued socialization. Human-equivalent: about 15 to 32.
Adult: 3 to senior onset
Maintenance years. Steady weight and activity matter more than milestones; senior onset depends on size, from about 6 (giant) to about 10 (small).
Senior: size dependent
Slower pace. Watch weight and joints, keep checkups routine, and adjust exercise down rather than out. Human-equivalent: roughly 45 and up.

Questions
Dog age calculator FAQ
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. The divide-by-seven rule comes from comparing average lifespans (about 70 human years against about 10 dog years). It fails early: dogs reach adulthood within their first two years, while the rule would call a 1-year-old dog about 7 human years old. The AVMA-based model on this page puts a 1-year-old dog closer to 15 human years.
How old is a 2-year-old dog in human years?
About 24 human years on the size-adjusted model used here, and the same for small, medium and large dogs. Giant breeds get there sooner in development, so the model puts them around 22. After year two, size is what separates the curves.
How can I tell how old my dog is without a birth date?
Look at teeth, coat, eyes and energy. Permanent teeth are usually all in by about 7 months; visible tartar tends to build after 1 to 2 years. Muzzle graying commonly starts between 5 and 7 years, and lens cloudiness appears later in life. Our how old is my dog page walks through each clue.
Do small dogs really live longer than big dogs?
Yes, as a group. Large and giant dogs age faster per calendar year, which is why the chart's giant column climbs to higher human-year values earlier. In this model the senior stage starts around 6 years for giant dogs versus around 10 for small dogs.
How accurate is a dog age calculator?
It is a useful estimate, not a biological measurement. Breed, health, lifestyle and the source model all change the answer. Use the size-adjusted result to understand the rough life stage, then treat the chart as a guide rather than a diagnosis.
Which size should I choose for my dog?
Choose the adult weight range closest to your dog: small up to 20 lb, medium 21-50 lb, large 51-100 lb, or giant over 100 lb. For a puppy, use the expected adult size when you know it; otherwise compare the neighboring columns.
