Cat Age Calculator: Cat Years to Human Years

Enter your cat's age in years and months to see an estimated human-year equivalent and the life stage that best matches the AAHA/AAFP age bands.

Estimated human-year equivalent

24human years

Life stage: Young Adult

A settled adult stage. Individual health, activity and history still matter more than a label.

This is an educational approximation using the common 15 / 24 / +4 model. It is not a biological measurement or veterinary diagnosis.

The estimate

How the cat age calculation works

Cats mature quickly during their first two years. This calculator maps year one to about 15 human years, year two to about 24, then adds about 4 human years for each later calendar year.

The first two intervals are interpolated by month. That gives a useful answer for a kitten or a birthday between whole years without pretending the curve is exact.

Why this is an approximation

There is no single veterinary equation that turns a cat's calendar age into a precise human biological age. Published calculators use slightly different charts, so DogAge shows the model openly and keeps the number separate from medical advice.

Year one ≈ 15

The first calendar year covers the steepest part of the common cat-age curve.

Year two → about 24

The second year adds about 9 human years, bringing a cat to a young-adult equivalent.

Then +4 a year

After two years, the product model adds roughly 4 human years per calendar year.

Feline life stages

The four cat life stages

These labels follow the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines. They describe an age band for general education, not a diagnosis. End-of-life situations can occur at any age and are not treated as a normal calculator stage.

Kitten

Birth to under 1 year

The fastest growth stage. The calculator switches labels at 12 months for a clear, non-overlapping boundary.

Young adult

1 to 6 years

An adult life stage with individual differences in activity, health and history.

Mature adult

7 to 10 years

A mature stage where routine preventive care and changes in behavior deserve attention.

Senior

Over 10 years

The AAHA/AAFP senior band. New or unusual changes should be discussed with a veterinarian.

No birthday? Start with clues

How to estimate a cat's age

Teeth, eye clarity, coat texture, muscle tone and activity can help a veterinarian make a rough age estimate. Each clue is affected by genetics, prior care and health, so no single sign should be treated as proof.

If a shelter record or adoption paperwork gives you a range, enter the midpoint and compare the neighboring months. The result is more honest as a range than as a precise birthday.

When to ask a veterinarian

A sudden change in appetite, weight, behavior, breathing, litter-box use or energy is a health question, not an age-calculator question. Use this page for orientation and ask a veterinary professional when something feels unusual.

Questions people ask

Cat age calculator FAQ

How do you calculate a cat's age in human years?

This calculator uses a common educational approximation: the first cat year is about 15 human years, two cat years is about 24, and each year after that adds about 4. Months are interpolated between those anchors, so the result is an estimate rather than a biological measurement.

How old is a 1-year-old cat in human years?

A 1-year-old cat is about 15 human years on the model used here. At 2 years, the estimate is about 24 human years, and the rate slows after that.

When is a cat considered a senior?

The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines place senior cats at over 10 years. This calculator changes to the Senior label at 11 years so the age bands are unambiguous in a month-based interface.

Do indoor and outdoor cats use different age formulas?

No. Lifestyle can affect health and lifespan context, but it does not change the calendar-age conversion formula. This calculator uses age and month only and does not make a lifespan or health prediction.

Is this cat age calculator medically accurate?

No calculator can measure biological age from a birthday alone. This page provides a transparent educational estimate and a general life-stage label. For unusual behavior, illness or an uncertain age, ask a veterinarian.

Sources and model boundary

The life-stage labels come from the 2021 AAHA/AAFP guideline. The 15 / 24 / +4 conversion is a transparent educational approximation commonly used by cat-age tools, not a formula published by that guideline.
