Puppy Age Calculator: Puppy Months to Human Years
Enter a puppy's age in months and expected adult size to get a more useful human-year estimate for the fast-growing first two years.
Estimated human-year equivalent
7.5human years
6 calendar months · puppy
Rapid growth stage: brain and body are still developing.
This estimate uses the expected adult size, because a puppy's first two years do not age at one fixed rate. It is an educational approximation, not a health assessment.

Four useful checkpoints
Puppy age in human years at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months
These examples use a medium expected adult size. Pick a size in the calculator for your puppy, because larger dogs move through the early curve differently.

Why size changes the result
Puppy months are more useful than the seven-year rule
The divide-by-seven rule uses one constant multiplier. It cannot describe the steep early growth curve, and it ignores the difference between a small adult dog and a giant breed.
This model scales the first year to a size-specific anchor, brings the second year to about 22 to 24 human years, then applies the same post-year-two rates used across the site. That makes the month input useful for puppies without pretending the result is exact.
What to choose for a mixed breed
Use the expected adult weight if your adoption or breeder records include one. If the estimate is uncertain, run the puppy through the two neighboring size columns and keep the result as a range. A veterinarian can give a better growth assessment at a regular puppy visit.
Size bands used here: small up to 20 lb, medium 21-50 lb, large 51-100 lb, and giant over 100 lb.
Questions people ask
Puppy age calculator FAQ
How old is a 6-month-old puppy in human years?
On the size-adjusted model, a 6-month-old puppy is about 7.5 human years for a small or medium expected adult size, about 7 for a large dog and about 6 for a giant dog. Treat that as a rough life-stage comparison, not a biological measurement.
Why does a puppy age calculator ask for adult size?
Small, medium, large and giant dogs mature at different rates and reach senior stages at different calendar ages. If you know the puppy's expected adult weight, choose the closest size; for a mixed-breed puppy, compare the neighboring columns.
Is a puppy's age just seven times its months?
No. The seven-year rule treats every calendar year as equal, but dogs mature especially quickly in their first two years. This calculator scales the first year to a size-adjusted anchor near 12 to 15 human years, then the second year toward about 22 to 24.
What should I enter for a puppy that is 18 months old?
Enter 18 months and select the expected adult size. The model treats that as 1 year and 6 months, which preserves the month-level detail that a whole-year chart would lose.
